When Good Cell Phone Ringtones Go Bad

Does anybody remember a time back when the sound of the bell was the only ringtone around? The ringtone got its name from bells, because it's actually supposed to sound like a bell. In fact, the first telephones had built in bells inside of them, which remained this way up to the nineties. But a change of sorts has happened as of late. Is it something we want? Do we even like this change? These are very intriguing but legitimate questions.

With the coming of the digital age, digital sounds with the use of the speaker have replaced the bell. This innovation made the people aware of the fact that they have other choices other than the standard bell tone. This has led to people doing what they wanted with phones when it rang. The sound of Star Trek's telephone raising the red alert when it rings, comes in to mind.

That was the spark that led to ringtones getting out of hand. Come to think of it, they're just communication devices, right? A little time after that, people started to realize that cellular phones were also capable of conveying joyous messages when they rang. There probably isn't a single person that's not acquainted with what this actually led to.

Now instead of a ringing, you hear all kinds of things, from songs, to voice clips, and just about anything else you can imagine. Isn't it irritating to be sitting in a meeting at work, and suddenly your co-worker's phone rings, but instead ofthe standard ring it's the sound of someone passing gas? No, that's not quite acceptable, but the fact is, it's become a major part of our society.

Almost everyone has a mobile phone these days, and almost all of those people have assigned ludicrous ringtones, meaning that no matter where you go, you're going to hear it. So the question is, what should be done about it? There are only a few things that you can actually do to lessen this unwanted phenomenon. For instance, you could set your ringtone intothe standard bell. This might set an example, and might make the person beside you fell a bit abashed when their own phone starts paying something downright ridiculous. In the end, as they say, is totally up to you.

If you are one of those people that opt to have a ridiculous ringtone, then that is your right of course. Your phone can emit any noise that you deem fit, just try to make sure that it isn't bothering those around you if you can help it. After all, is it something that YOU would want to hear?

Ridiculous ringtones are here to stay, that much is certain. All we can do at this point is sit back and watch. Just try to set the example that you would most want to see, and from there...who knows.
